The notice of appeal given in the case of Watkins v. Adams has been withdrawn.

The sale advertised by Messrs Matson and which is to take place at Duvauchelle's Bay on Monday next, is an unusually attractive one—2o horses, 150 head of cattle, and 1,500 sheep will be submitted to the hammer, on account of Messrs Piper and others; and at the same time, Mr Denny's property, which is one of the most beautiful sites on the Peninsula, together with his life stock, will be offered for sale. The bona fide character of this sale will no doubt attract a large attendance of buyers.

On Wednesday next the Akaroa Hope Lodge of Good Templars will hold an open meeting, when in addition to the advacacy of the principles of the order, there will be a social hour or two spent by the members of the Lodge and any visiting friends. The public are invited to attend.

There are, we apprehend, very few places in Canterbury where medical men make such frequent moves as in Akaroa. The last four years have seen the advent of four doctors, two have left, one (Dr Pearde) is on the point of leaving, and his place will be taken by Dr Guthrie, who has arranged to take over his practice. Dr Pearde, in addition to his professional skill, has been a \ery useful and energetic member of society. He was an active promoter of Good Teniplarism in the district, and took a prominent part in the establishment of a Masonic Lodge ; he was also a member of the Literary Institute Committee, and indeed was always foremost in anything which advanced the moral or social interest of the community. He will be regretted by a number of friends, whose good wishes will follow him to whatever locality he may choose as his future home.

A meeting of the Akaroa School Committee was held last Monday evening. Present— (in „the -chair), Dalglish, Bruce, Sims, Missen, Annand, and Rodrigues. Mr Bushell agreed to act as collector for the school fees at 10 per cent, but as yet the chairman had no reply from the Board confirming the appointment. A schedule of the expenses required by the committee for the current year was laid before the meeting, but the committee subsequently agreed to adjourn the filling up of the form until the sub-committee had given in their report in regard to the water-closets, &c.

We are obliged to hold over reports of the opening of a Good Templar's Lodge at Le Bon's, the annual meeting of the Akaroa Library; parish meeting at Okain's, and other matter owing to a pressure of advertisements till our next issue.

The s.s. Taranaki, advertised to. leave here this evening, has been detained at Wellington, and in consequence her departure from this port is postponed till Saturday evening.

The Little Akaloa annual church meeting was held in the schoolroom on "the evening of Wednesday, the 2nd. inst There was a good attendance. The greater part of the evening was devoted to the report, and a lecture on " Dreams " by the Rev. D. O'Hampton. The report, so far as Little Akaloa is concerned, was not satisfactory, the curate complaining of the apathy manifested by many of the residents for sacred things. The lecture, though lengthy, was eagerly listened to, even by the children, of which a number was present. Several pieces of music by members of the congregation, contributed to enliven the evening. Votes of thanks were accorded to the building committee, the collectors, the choir, the school committee, for the use of the school, and to those who had given their services on the present occasion. Strange to say, the rev. lecturer was not considered worthy even of this favour, The meeting was concluded by the doxology. The proceeds of the evening, £3 14s 6d, go to the church building fund, there being a considerable sum in arrears.

The first meeting of subscribers to the Wainui Public Library was held in the schoolroom on May Ist. Mr. J. Bell, the Chairman of the Provisional Committee, submitted a statement of accounts to the meeting, by which it appeared that the receipts up to date amounted to £49 6s 6d, and the expenditure to -£30 1 Is 6d, leaving a balance in hand of £18 15s, while books to the value of £1G I.os have been ordered some months ago, and may be expec-ted immediately. The following persons were elected as a committee for the ensuing year—J. Kennedy, D. Reid, D. McKay, D. Kennedy, E. S. Sumner, and J. Bell. JBell was appointed president, D. Reid. Treasurer, E. S. Sumner, secretary and treasurer, and A. Hunter and C. Kennedy, were elected as auditors. Unfortunately this library, as yet, is not being supported as it ought to be by the inhabitants generally.

We are glad to observe that efforts are about being made to hold a steeplechase meeting on Mr. Innian's run, German Bay, during the present month. Several gentlemen interested in racing matters are at present earnestly interesting themselves in furtherance of the movement. It will be seen by an advertisement in another column, that a meeting will be held at Bruce's Hotel, to-morrow afternoon, at 3 p.m.
