New Plymouth, May 8. Mai or Atkinson, who is waiting for an opportunity to get away to meet the whole of his colleagues at Wellington, could hot get off to the Stella owing to the rough sea. He will remain here until the Stella returns. The weather is very stormy. A shock of earthquake was felt this morning at 7.20. At the Supreme Court there was only one person for trial, E. C. Meredith, late Clerk to the Resident Magistrate's Court, Carlyle and Hawera. He was found guilty of-embezzlement, and sentenced to two years' imprisonment. Wellington, May 8. News has been received here that the cable between Amoy and Shangtiai is broken. Nelson, May 8. As the schooner May was coming down the Bay early this morning she was struck by a heavy sea, and the master, Glover,, was swept overboard and drowned. Kumara, May 8. A fire broke out at Tuballs' general store last night. The store was entirely destroyed, with two private houses adMi joining. The fire was prevented spreading to the adjacent buildings by the exertions of the inhabitants. Several ex-members of the Greymouth * and. Hokitika Fire Brigades rendered valuaable assistance. There is no local Brigade.- Tuballs is. the sole sufferer, his loss being estimated at over £2000. He was insured in the South British for £2250. Dunedin, May 8. A rule nisi for a new trial has been granted in the case of Russell v. Smythies on the ground of misdirection by the judge.
