A DARK NIGHT IN AKAROA.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MATT,. Sir, —Will you have the kindness of inserting these few lines in your columns. As I was going on business on Friday, May 4th, I was nearly knocked over by a trap. I think it is a shame to the Borough Council to have no lamp-posts in the street in town. In every civilized country that I have been, France, Germany, Russia, England, China, and all parts of New Zealand I have seen some lamps to show the road to the travellers.
May I ask Councillor Cullen why did he go against the motion when it was put before the Borough Council.—l am, &c, A RESIDENT IN TOWN.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —What have you done with Interorem, his words appear to me to becoming true. I certainly don't think he accused Mr B. S. wrongfully when he said he had some nice little pet schemes of his own to nurse, and he has not been long in bringing one forward, but thanks to the Chairman and Mr. J. Duxbury he was not al-. lowed to push it through. Then another worthy member tables a motion that he wants ten chains of road metalled to enable him to get his beer home ; but before the Road Board starts that, job they should take a walk up to Morgan's pitch, and I think that if honesty is the order of the day they will allow Houghton to get his beer the best way he can, and spend the money on Morgan's pitch to allow a dozen or more farmers to get their flour in slippery weather.
Houghton's part of the road is nearly flat, while the other is an incline of about one in three. I hope the members will not forget to do their duty in this case.— I am, &c, FARMER'S FRIEND.
