WATKINS V. ADAMS.

(TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL.)

Sir, —That the plaintiff in the above action should receive a letter of condolence over the loss of his case in Court, from some of the leading business men of Akaroa, is not remarkable. Those gentlemen who have received payment for accounts similarly contracted, though they may chuckle over their own good fortune, must, I am sure, feel for a brother in adversity ; but that sympathy is not shared in by the public generally, as far as I have been able to make out. The feelings rather, which predominated in the minds or! the publie,.are pleasure that the plaintiff lost his case, and indignation towards the men who could allow accounts of such magnitude for articles unnecessary to be run up against a man in so short a time without making him aware of it. There was one honourable exception, as shown by the evidence in the case, among the Akaroa storekeepers. As for the others who were mixed up in this affair, they must either have known that there • was something wrong in the way these accounts were run up, and purposely kept Mr. Adams in the dark, or they have shown a degree of obtuseness in this matter, which their dealings generally with the public are very far from giving evidence of. " Make money honestly if you can, but make money, is an old motto very often followed out now-a-days."—Yours, &c, MATTHEW BRAMBLE.
