AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held at the office on Wednesday last. Present—The Mayor and Crs. Penlington, Chad wick, Cuji ellj Bruce, Annand, Waeckerle, and Wagstaff. correspondence. From H. G. Billens, submitting a sketch for street lamps, with quotations for same. The Mayor intimated that he had received a letter from 11. G Watkins, but as its subject did not concern the Council, it was not considered. The Work's Committee reported that Mr. Vangiona could not proceed with the construction of culvert in Balguerie-street for a few days, and that Saxton and Williams had delivered 2,830 feet of kirbing. payments. The following accounts were passed for payment. Town Hall Committee ... 210 0 J. D Davis 2 10 6 Town Clerk (salary) ... 8 6 8 G. Lardner 0 5 6 Petty cash 0 15 7 £14 8 3 distribution of keys of seal chest. The Mayor handed a key to each* Councillor of the box in which the Borough seal is stored. BANK BALANCE. The Mayor reported that the sum of £17 10s had been received from the sale of dog collars, and that the sum of £31)7 3s was the balance lying at the Bank in favour of the Council. The contracts let amounted to about£l2o. inaccuracies of borough map. The Mayor was sorry to intimate that he had been informed that there were a great number of mistakes in the map lately prepared by Mr. Pavitt, and suggested the appointment of a committee to examine and inquire into the alleged inaccuracies. ' The Town Clerk said that Messrs I Inwood and Chalmers had occasion to consult the map, and both gentlemen spoke of the incorrectness of same. To set the matter at rest, it would be well to appoint a Committee to ascertain whether these inaccuracies spoken of really existed, as Mr. Pavitt had promised to correct any errors. There were one or two little things which required to be added, such as the acreage and number of reserves.

Cr. Cullen moved—'? That the Mayor, and Crs. Wagstaff, Penlington, and Bruce

be appointed a committee to report upon the alleged inaccuracies of the Borough map, and especially the Oddfellow's section."

The motion was seconded by Cr. Waeckerle, and carried. LIGHTING OBSTRUCTIONS. Cr. Annand inquired whether it was the duty of contractors to light obstructions, as he had that evening heard that one man had fell, and sustained some injury. Cr. Chadwick.—Was the abrasion much? It was resolved—" That the contractor's attention be called to the obstructions in the streets, and they be requested to light same." •

SECURITY FOR FIDELITY OF SERVANTS.

The Mayor said that under the 116 th clause of tbe Municipal Corporation's Act, it was necessary on the part of the Town Clerk and other officers entrusted with the charge of money to find security. The Clerk was instructed to find security, in terms with the section of the Act. BURGESS ROLL. The new Burgess Roll was signed, and ordered to be the roll for the Borough.

DRAINAGE.

Cr. Bruce said that he had been asked by Mrs. Brown whether the Council would have any objection to her constructing a side channel to conduct the drainage into the main drain.

It was resolved that all applications must be made in writing.

LAMP POSTS,

A rather animated discussion took place on the subject of lighting the town, and in order to test the feeling of the Council Cr. WAGSTAFFinoved —" That six wooden lamp posts, with the necessary iron work, be ordered immediately, and that the requisite lamps, as shown in a design submitted by Mr. Billens," be provided. Cr. Cullen seconded the motion which on being put to the vote, was carried, Crs. Annand and Bruce voting against it.

Cr. Abnabd explained that lie was not opposed to lighting the town, but he was not in favour of ordering more than three lamps, that being the number recommended by the committee appointed to report upon the matter.

The Mayor said the Council would not be justified in lighting one end of the town at the expense of the other, and it would be wise to apportion the number of lights. The Work's Committee were instructed to select sites for the lamps. gravelling main road. Cr. Waeckerle moved —"That the main road from Waeckerle's Hotel to Grehan Valley, be gravelled immediately." Cr. Annand seconded the motion, which was carried.
