THE EUROPEAN WAR. Bombay, May 1.
The Turkish Admiral, with several ironclads, have engaged the Russian batteries at Brahilo, the capital of Walachia, on the banks of the Danube. They bombarded the town, and withdrew. Gladstone has given notice to move in the House of Commons that Government should continue exertions on behalf of Turkish Christian subjects, and exact changes from the Porte. Liberal leaders disapprove, and will move previous question. Conservatives say that the motion supports the Government policy. Singapore, May 5. Northcote iv replying to a question, said that England was unprepared to consent to the exclusion of war vesssels from the Suez Canal, but would take steps to protect the canal. Russians gradually advancing into Servia, and have occupied Bulgaria. London, May 5. Military preparations are going forward in the English arsenals and dockyards. The Times states that seven cavalry regiments, four brigades of artillery, forty-six battalions of infantry are in reserve foi service abroad. If required, the whole of the Russian army will be placed on^warfooting.
