TUESDAY, APRIL 17, 1877.

As the people interested in the drainage of the lakes and railway question are naturally anxious to see the EHcsmere Trust under weigh, they will, no' doubt, regret to learn, that owing to the absence of Mr. Fitzroy, the member for the Selwyn, at present in the North Island, the nominations for the vacant seats have been delayed. We understand that when Mr. Bowen was in Christchurch, he informed Mr. Montgomery that the chairman- of the Ellesincre Road Board had been asked to nominate or recommend, two gentlemen whom the Governor could appoint to the vacancies in the Trust, and that the chairman replied he could not name anyone, or something to that effect. Mr. Bowen then endeavoured to communicate with Mr. Pitzroy, the member for Selwyn, in •whose district the Ellesmere Road District is situated, but that gentleman being in the North Island and his whereabouts being unknown to Mr. Bowen, there was difficulty in finding him. Mr. Bowen sent two telegrams to two different places, but up to the time of Mr.'Bowen's leaving for Wellington no reply had been received. As the people of Ellesmere are indifferent about representation, it is to be hoped that the Board will be at once made complete by nominating members for the district, whether resident or not.
