Fears are entertained for the safety of the schooner Edward, which left Lyttelton for Le Bon's about ten days ago. A gentleman who arrived in Akaroa yesterday, reports having seen a vessel off Le Bon's, and we sincerely hope she may turn out to be the missing Edward.

The Wainui district is to be congratulated on the addition of another institution—a library—whiclys attached to.the school building recently completed. The books have been judiciously selected, comprising works by the most popularauthors, such as Dickens, Thackeray, and Scott, and we understand that a number of valuable referential works are also about to be added.

Dr. Bulmer., on Friday last, whilst essaying to brave the perils of the deep on horseback, through some contretemps or other during the journey, came to grief. Gaily the brave rider was cantered through the flood, when suddenly, without warning, the horse and its rider vanished from mortal ken. The onlookers were horrified, but their suspense was cut short by seeing that a dissolution of partnership had taken place, as, when they appeared, the steed calmly walked on shore, whilst the medicus was floundering and trying to swim to terraβ-rfna. We are happy to state that nothing worse than damp was the result.

The discussion is open to the public, and the gentler sex are specially invited to favour the meeting with their presence. A good and profitable night's, enjoyment may be fully assured.

A contemporary says :—We often hear of gentlemen running off with ladies, but'it is not often that the opposite fact occurs. However, we can assure our readers that something very like it occurred recently in a village a few miles north of Chester. It seems that on sole-cake night, several, girls and young women, wanting a little fun, proceeded to the house of a neighbour. On their way there they persuaded a young man to accompany them, and made him put on a woman's dress and bonnet. On nearing their neighbour's house, his eldest son heard the party coming, and hid himself behind the gate, intending to seize one of the young women. Upon reaching the gate the young fellow crawled from behind and caught hold- of what he supposed to be a woman, but it happened that the false " fair one" was a strapping young man. He or " she" stooped down, and catching the young fellow (who though 24 years old, is very diminutive) up- under his arm, run off with him. The young fellow, too frightened to see that his abductor was not a female, set up most terrible screams, crying out, "Ma! Ma! a woman is running away with me." Poor" Ma," hearing the voice of the hope and heir of the family, caught up a besom and courageously ran to the rescue, calling oub, " Put him down, yon brazen madam! put him down!" After a short chase, the poor young fellow, sadly crestfallen, was restored to the " ma"-ternal arms, but the " brazen madam" escaped. The next day the " murder" was out, and many of the people who had been so alarmed the night before laughed heartily over the affair.
