AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the above Council was held at the Chambers on Wednesday evening last. Present—The Mayor, and Crs. Annand, Waeckerle, Bruce, Watkins, and Wagstaff. correspondence. From F. Halms, directing the Council's attention to the insecure and rotten condition of the pound, and intimating his intention to resign the office of poundkeeper unless the yards were placed in a state of repair. Cr. Waeckerle said that it would be impossible to patch the fencing, and that the erection of a new pound was a positive necessity. The Mayor said that it would be advisable to sell the timber of the present pound for firewood, by auction, otherwise the Borough would derive no benefit from the timber. Cr. Wagstaff moved-—" That specifica. tions be prepared, and tenders invited, for the erection of a new pound, the sight to be fixed by the Work's Committee." Cr. Waeckerle seconded the motion, which was carried. ■ From Sigiey and Dickson, requesting to be informed whether the Council intend

accepting their tender for the formation of footpaths on Beach road, from Wood Bros.' to Waeckerle's Hotel, and pointing out ,_ that the gradient's laid out by Mr. Fenton, # indicate more work than the specifications intimated, hut offering to abide by same. The Mayoii informed the Council that he had had a conversation with Sigiey and X Dickson in reference to tlvdr tender, and they were quite willing to execute the' work under the direction of the Borough Engineer. Cr. Annand.-—Their tender has never been read to the Council. The Mayor said that it had, the amount being £1 15*. per chain. Cr. Wagstaff said that Sigiey and Dick- . son were carrying out their present contract in a most creditable manner, and thought the Council could not do better than accept their tender, which was the lowest. The Mayor was confident that the contractors were desirous of giving the Council every satisfaction. The Council had a specimen of othei contractors' handy work in the protective wall. The footpaths were publicly tendered for, and he held that Sigiey and Dickson's tender should be ' accepted. Cr. Annand remarked that the footpath had been laid off over 20 feet from his door, and that the verandah, which he intended erecting, would be two feet on the road, according to the plan. Cr. Wagstaff said that the engineer <"§ had fixed the minimun width of the footpaths at 6 feet, but to meet the requirements of certain curves, it would be found necessary to increase the width in some places. Cr. Watkins held that if the line of footpath, as laid off by Mr. Fenton, was maintained, it would take off a good bit of the road. From his store to Armstrong's would almost admit of a straight line. Cr. Annand held that the Council were not bound to adhere to Mr. Fenton's pegs. The Mayor said that he was sure Mr. Fenton would be most happy to alter them, but, of course the Council would have to pay him. Cr. Wagstaff moved—" That the tender of Sigiey and Dickson, for the formation of footpaths on Beach road, be accepted." The motion was seconded by Cr. Bruce, and carried. ALTERATION in width of footpaths. Cr. Annand moved—" That Mr. Fenton ** be instructed to alter the pegs, defining the line of footpath, from Church-street to Mr. Watkin's store, to an uniform width, following the line of sections." « Cr. Bruce seconded the motion, which was carried. MAP OF THE BOROUGH. Mr. Pavitt, who was in attendance, reported that he had completed his contract, and handed in a complete map of the new Borough, drawn at a scale of a chain to the inch. The map, on examination, elicited the entire approval of the members of the Council. street improvements. Cr. Waeckerle moved —" That the Work's Committee be instructed to cause ■ lower Jolie-street to be formed, and Brittonstreet metalled without delay." The motion was seconded by Cr. Bruce, and carried. ELLESMEUE AND FORSYTH TRUSTS ACT. Cr. Wagstaff said that the Government were very slow in nominating gentlemen to fill the two vacancies on the Trust Board for the Eliesmere district. The m time was passing away quickly, and he * feared that unless prompt action were taken, the Board would not bein a position to submit a report to Parliament at its approaching session. He had been informed ■* that Mr. Montgomery had communicated with the Government on the subject, but he regretted to say that the Government had not yet thought fit to bestir themselves in the matter. He moved—" That the attention of the Government be directed to the vacancies which exist in the Board for the Eilesmere district, and requesting that the same be filled without delay, and that the Governor-in-Council may be pleased to convene a meeting of the Trust at an early date." Cr. Waeckerlie remarked that .he observed from' the papers that Mr. Montgomery had already taken action in the matter. Cr. Watkins seconded the motion, which was carried. BOROUGH SEAL. The Mayor reported that the Borough seal was now in the hands of the Council, but he regretted to say that there was still a slight literal in the inscription—an appearing for in. The alteration last effected * cost £2. The present error could not be detected without the aid of a microscope. Cr. Waeckerle moved—"That the seal now in possession of the Council, as shown in the margin of this resolution, be. adopted ' as the seal of the Council." •' *' ~ The motion was seconded by Cr.'Annand, and carried. . Vf • FOOTPATH KIRBING.' ' . ' Cr. Watkins moved—" That the Work's Committee be empowered to order the necessary tenders to complete the footpaths.' Cr. Wagstaff seconded the motion, which was carried. FINANCES. The following accounts were passed for payment. & s d J. Allot ... ... ... 110 C. Lee 1 10 0 G.
