The ratepa3 r ers of Parnell have passed a resolution cal ling upon their representatives in the Eden County Council to vote for the entire suspension of the Counties Act. Wellington, March 20. The officers of the late Provincial Government this afternoon presented the Hon. Mr. Fitzherbert and Mr. Bunny each with a silver inkstand and illuminated testimonial. Eeefton, March 20. The Energetic Mining Company has declared another dividend of three shillings per share. Eiverton, March 20. Douglas, prospector for the Invercargill Company at Lockwood ranges, after twelve months' work, has struck a payable reef near George Creek - He went to Invercargill to-day, with the object of floating a company there, and bringing machinery on the ground. Invercargill, March 20. A man named John Monaghan was brought up at the Magistrate's Court this morning charged with the wilful murder of Thomas Casserley, who has a married sister residing at Milton. The men had come into town to keep St. Patrick's Day. and both sta3 r ed at the Hibernicon hotel on Sunday night. On Monday morning , Monaghan entered Casserley's room, and wanted to " see out" an unsettled dispute. This was smoothed over at the time, and the two of them went to the bar, where each had four glasses of brandy. Both seem to have gone to bed then, overcome with drink, and some time afterwards Casserley was found lying on the floor with a cut on the back of his head, and blood sprinkled about the floor and walls. Medical aid was procured after considerable delay. He was then removed to the hospital, where, being told there was no chance of recovery, he said : " Jack Monaghan killed me." He died this morning. Prisoner was remanded till after the inquest. Waimate, March 20. Eichard A. A. Sherrin was arrested last night at nine o'clock on a warrant from Timaru, charged with malicious libel against George M'Cullough Eeid, proprietor of the Otago Guardian. The libel was published in the Watiangi Tribune of Wednesday, March 14. Accused was brought before Mr. Studholme, J.P., this morning, and remanded for eight days to Timaru. Bail was refused.
