AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual weekly meeting of the above Council was held in Mr. Kissel's room of Wednesday last. Present—The Mayor, and Crs. Wagstaff, Chad wick, Cullen, Bruce, Waeckerle, Penlington, and Annand. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from General Government, advising subsidy of £17 10s 4d for quarter ending 31st December last. From Sigley and Dixon, saying that they would commence their contract as soon as the Council wished. From Mr. F. Pavitt, saying that he would be down with the map on Wednesday, 28th inst. From Fergusson and Mitchell, Dunedin, advising despatch of Corporation seal. CONTRACT FOR CHURCH-STREET, &C. Cr. Penlington moved—"That the clerk be instructed to write to Sigley and Dixon, asking them to commence their contract on Monday. 26th inst." Seconded by Cr. Cullen, and carried. Cr. Waeckerle moved—" That it be an instruction to the contractors to commence work in Church-street." The motion was seconded by Cr. Annand, and carried. ESTIMATE OF INCOME AND EXPENDITURE. The Financial Committee brought up their report of the proposed expenditure and the income of Borough, from Ist April to 31st March, 1878. The estimated expenditure for this period is as follows : —Office expenses, £108 ; charges in connection with " Public Health Act," £20 ; day labour, £52 ; foot-paths, main road, side streets, culverts, &c, £300; repairs to pound, £30; rent and advertising, £70; lighting lamps, £37 10s. The estimate income being as follows : —The rateable value of property in the Borough being £4003, which at a shilling rate with the Government subsidy, gives an income of £400 ; auctioneers and publicans licenses, £170 ; dog tax and fines, £65 ; various licenses, £11. Cr. Cullen moved—" That the estimates be published as required by sec. 109 of the Municipal Corporation Act, 1876." Seconded by Cr. Penlington, and carried. Cr. Wagstaff moved—" That a rate of one shilling in the pound upon the value of the rateable property in the Borough be made for the year ending 31st March, 1878, such rate to be payable at the office o£ the Borough on April 30th. 1877." Seconded by Cr. Waeckerle, and carried. The Mayor verbally reported that Mr. Fenton had not been able to finish his survey of the main road for footpaths, &c, so as to be able to give a report and estimate to the Council that evening. He might say, however, that the main .road

did not require much, only patching, unless between the Government jetty and Chadwick's shop. The footpaths, it was proposed to carry all the way from Wood Bros, store to Waeckerle's Hotel. Kissel, rent 1 12 0 On the motion of Cr. Cullen, seconded by Cr. Wagstaff, the above accounts were passed for payment. PETITION FROM RESIDENTS IN JOLIE .STREET. Cr. Wakckerle moved that Jolie-street be formed from Meech's cieck to Britain street, and that Britain-street be metalled. Seconded by Cr. Chadwick. Cr. Wagstaffmoved, as an amendment, that tenders be called for the work proposed to l>e done by Cr. Waeckerle, and all the side streets, viz., Grehan road, Balguerie-street, Bnnirt-street, &c, in one job as soon as specifications are prepared. Seconded by Cr. Bruce. Cr. Wackerlie declined to withdraw his motion, and on the vote being taken for the amendment, the ayes were Crs. WagstrfE, Bruce, Ann and, Waeckerle, Penlington, Cullen, Chadwick, and the Mayor. The amendment was consequently carried. NOTICE OF MOTION. Cr. Annand gave notice that at the next meeting of the Council he would move that the Governor in Council be requested to reserve 2.000 acres of the Waste Lands of the Crown for the purpose of granting the same to the Corporation of the Borough, in terms of section 350 of Municipal Corporation Act, 1876. The Council then adjourned.
