DISTRICT FIRING.

The annual district firing took place on Tuesday last, under-the supervision of Serjeant-Majors Kerr and Lewis, at the Akaroa Artillery Butts. The weather, unfortunately, was very unfavourable, the wind being high, and the rain coming down without intermission, these _ drawbacks rendering good shooting an impossibility. The wind was so gusty, that it was exceedingly difficult to judge " Avindage." If the same class of shooting displayed by Messrs. Billens and Meech, at the first and second ranges, had been maintained throughout, there is but little doubt the first prize would have fallen to the lot of either gentleman, as 61 was the highest number scored in Canterbury. Akaroa this year will carry oft about the fifth prize. The following are the scores at the respective ranges :—
