AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday last. -' Present —Messrs. Piper (chairman), Duxbury,Lelievre and Shadbolt. CORRESPONDENCE. From J. Al Cunningham, intimating that the expenses attendant on Conference of Chairmen of Road Boards amount to £19 4s. 2d., and that 14s. 6d. is the liability of the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board. From R. Dawber, informing the Board that a culvert at entrance to his premises was destroyed by carting soil for bridge, and requesting that the same be repaired. The Clerk was instructed to report upon the matter. From E. Chappel, and a number of the residents of Long Bay road, drawing the Council's attention to the fearful condition' of tlie road, and pointing out that the construction of the road had been put off for the last four .years, with all sorts of pie-crust promises, while the Road Board had not forgotten to rate them up to the " knocker." Mr. Duxbury said that it was most disgraceful that the inhabitants of Long Bay had not been supplied with a road before this. He suggested that a competent surveyor be employed to lay off the road. The gradients of the road at present are such that any attempt to improve it would be throwing money away. The road would open up communication with Le Bon's and other bays. Mr. Shadbolt remarked that the County Council had £300 in hand to complete the work, and that the surveyor, in laying out a new track, might make a worse job of it than Mr. Townsend did. He suggested that Mr?Woodill be employed to lay it off, as.he felt confident that he could do it as well as any surveyor. Mr. Duxbury said that this character of labour was like lawyer's work, it would have to be done by a professional man, as a trigonometrical survey would have to be made. Mr. Shadbolt : But we have no money. Mr. Duxbury said that the Wainui Board had taken care of its money for the construction of the road in question. The settlers of Long Bay had been groping for years for a road, while there had been three or four made to Okain's, and a similar number to Le Bon's—in fact the Board had been talking for years over the matter, and to settle the question he would move— "That a competent surveyor be employed to lay off a road from the German Bay Saddle to the Long Bay Saddle at as even a grade as may be practicable. The motion was seconded by Mr. Lelievre and carried. tenders. Rubble Wall, Robinsons Bay. —T. Johnston, £14 per chain, three months; ,P. O'Grady and party, £8 per chain, half to be held back for six months, to ensure the permanency of the wall; Gunning and Co., £10 per chain, three months; John Hewitt, £70 10s. for the whole. Mr. Lelievre moved—That the tender of O'Grady and Co., being the lowest, be accepted. Mr. Duxbury seconded the motion, which was carried. MAIN ROAD. Mr. Duxbury said that the main road near Haines' Hotel required putting in order, and that it was no use waiting for the County Council to adopt the Act, as in the event of the Act being adopted, it was likely that the members would be fighting among themselves over trifling matters for two or three years to come.,The Chairman.—You have no right, Mr. Duxbury, to anticipate what that body may do. We had better confine our attention to our own business, and allow the County Council to fight out their own battles. Mr. Duxbury moved—" That the clerk be instructed to inspect the main road near Haine's hotel, and prepare specifications .for widening and re-metalling same." The motion was seconded by Mr. Lelievre, and carried. wainui valley bridge. Mr. Duxbury moved—" That, plans and specifications be prepared and tenders invited for the erection of a bridge on the Wainui Valley road,of stone abutinentsand gohia timber." The motion was seconded by Mr. Shadbolt, and carried. services of an engineer.. Mr. Duxbury moved—" That * applications, stating fee required, for the services of an engineer to lay oft a road to Long Bay, be invited." The motion was seconded by Mr. Lelievre, and carried. The Chairman drew the Board's attention to an unsightly object of a frame of a ship near his land, which he considered should be removed. Mr. Duxbury said that Mr. C. Hartley, of Okains, had informed him that the frame was his property. The clerk was instructed to write to Mr. Hartley, requesting its removal. PAYMENTS.
