THE LATE EMBEZZLEMENT CASE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —Through the columns of the Presswe are informed that the defalcations in the above case extended as far back as 1873. If such is the case, I ask was it, or is it not the duty of some officer appointed by the Government to audit the accounts or keep a supervision of the books under that unfortunate young man's control. Common sense dictates, Sir, it was. If such is the case, the party who has been guilty of such dereliction of duty, and who has in a manner forwarded the young man's progress to a felon's doom, is deserving of the most severe censure at the hands of the department with which he has to deal. If like proceedings are allowed to be passed over in silence, all I can acclaim is 0 TEMPORA, 0 MORES.
