THE LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH.
A meeting of the abovs Board was held immediately after the rising of the Borough Council, on Wednesday evening last. APPLICATION FOR A SITE FOR FELLMONGERY. A letter was read from Mr. Illingsworth, informing the Board that he had selected a site at the outlet of the creek, opposite Messrs. Nalder and Inwood's offices, for his proposed f ellinongery establishment. The Mayor said that since Mr. lUingsworth's intention to establish himself in that line of business in Akaroa was made known, the public appeared to view the matter very unfavourably. Several persons had spoken to him on the subject, and were of opinion that there was ample room for such an industry outside the town. Mr. Annand considered it strange that those persons had not communicated their, objections to the Board if they felt so' strong in the matter. He would propose— " That the Council offer no obstruction to Mr. Illingsworth proceeding with the erection of his establishment." Mr. Wagstaff said %at he was not personally aware whether the establishment of such an industry was likely to prove detrimental to the public health, but as fellmongery was one of the obnoxious trades mentioned in the Act, he thought the Board could do no harm by erring on the wrong side, and would therefore move —" That the Board decline to accede to Mr. Illingsworth's proposal." The motion was seconded by Mr. Chadwick. Messrs. Bruce, Waeckerle, and Cullen, also urged their objection to the proposal. Mr. Annan d's motion fell through for want of a seconder, and Mr. Wagstaff's motion was then put and carried. The Board adjourned for a fortnight.
