Still raining since Saturday morning. Yesterday the Opawa rose higher than was ever known, at least one foot over planking bridge. Northern embankment burst % at eastern end, and has since carried away Dodson's stables. Taylor River not up. Water eight inches on floor at Penny's. The fresh is not high in Blenheim, and is now subsiding very slow; it is still raining. Byford and Son started from Opawa in a boat, and were capsized. The boy was drowned. Two men were caught in willows, after being two hours partially in water, and were saved by a volunteer crew in Oxley's boat starting from the railway, station. Wellington, February 7. All-England cricket match, although good deal of rain during day, and ground exceedingly wet, play commenced shortly before three. Englishmen winning toss, sent Wellington twentjy-tw-o in, Southerton and Shaw bowling, Southerton's first ball . took wicket of W. P. Salmon, and his companion Russell was put out without scoring. Terrible rains on Friday and Saturday. Streets flooded. On Saturday morning the roadway was sluiced-away at Zig-zag by rain. Roadway between Greenstone Junction and Teremakau stripped. Greenstone is all but washed away. Foley's butchery and hotel and Morgan's cottages destroyed entirely. Davidson's boot store and Harris's hotel partially. Bridge across Greenstone Creek at township washed away, and approaches at bridge over Greenstone Creek, Junction washed away. Road between Greymouth and Kumara will take three weeks to repair. Traffic suspended. Claims round Barker's at Kumara all stopped. Christchurch, February 5. Weather again very bad; rain has been falling heavily since Friday night till this' morning. Weather still threatening. Farmers prospects are looking bad ; ~ large quantity of grain cut, which no doubt will be greatly injured. 0 amaru, February^. Raining heavily last night. Continues through day. Dunedin, February 26. Messrs Cargill, Gibbs and Co. have received the following telegrams from Hilmuth, Schwats and Co., dated London, January 31 : —" Next series of wool sales will commence on February 20.«. 250,000 bales are expected. Since close of laßt series the market has been quiet; trade on Continent flat; transactions are very small. The Antwerp market forplattey wool is lower." Salary of Chairman of Vincent County has been fixed at £400. Mr. Vincent Pyke has been hung in
effigy, opposite Town Council Chamber, at Clyde, because he gave a deliberative vote for <3romwelL and||a casting vote for Clyde, being county town. Dunedin Co-operative Tailor's Society have withdrawn several members from their establishment in Dunedin, in consequence of wages being reduced 25 per •cent. Sehoslmaster's Association has been reorganised under the title of " Educational Institute of Otago." It will admit to members Trip other than teachers.
