The County Council have voted their chairman a salary of £200 a year, and one guinea per day for expenses while travelling on county business. Wellington, January 12. The Hawea, after leaving Picton at three this morning, found the schooner Hannah Barratt on the rocks in Tory Channel with her rudder and fore foot gone, her copper nearly all off, besides being otherwise damaged. The captain and crew had abandoned her. The Hawea got her off, took her in tow, and made the passage across in twelve hours. The Hannah Barratt was bound from Lyttelton to Picton in ballast, to load timber. At 10.30 on Wednesday night she missed Tory Channel and went into a false bay. Both anchors were dropped, and the next morning they tried towarp her out. Both warps broke and she drifted on the rocks. The captain decided to abandon her to insure the safety of the crew. She was owned by Captain Eenner, and was insured for £400 in the Standard and £400 in the National. Dr. Lemon accompanies Hon George McLean to attend the Australian cable conference. The Port Darwin line is interrupted north of Peake. The Hon Major Atkinson will proceed to Auckland to-day by the Hotorua at six p.m. January 13. Henry Anderson, editor of the Evening Post, has commenced an action for libel against the proprietors of the Argus for certain alleged injurious and unjustifiable reflections upon his character, which appeared in that paper. The Argus gives the names of its solicitors. Wanganui, January 12. At a meeting of cricketers last night it was decided so accept Mr. Bennett's terms, and the English cricketers play here on or about 10th February. Twenty-two are going into practice. Hokitika, January 12. At the meeting of the County Council it was decided that such part of the Counties Act as is mentioned in the third schedule shall not come into force in the County of Westland. Port Chalmers, January 12. The Mataura returned to port with the loss of the starboard anchor. The cable parted, and the port anchor was let go, but came up without the fluke. She gets fresh anchors, and will probably sail to-day. Dunedin, January 13. THE PRESBYTERIAN SYNOD ON CHURCH MUSIC. The Presbyterian Synod devoted the whole of yesterday's sitting, extending over eight hours, to the discussion of the question of instrumental music, which came up on a petition from the *)amaru Presbytery, praying the Synod to rescind its decision of last year on the subject, and to send down overtures to Presbyteries and Kirk Sessions. The ultimate decision of the Synod was a resolution by the Rev. Mr. Finlayson, declining to accede to the petition of the Oamaru Presbytery, and declaring that no express definite command is claimed for the use of instrumental music in Christian worship, nor is such music to be regarded as an essential part of worship, but is merely permitted as an aid in sustaining the voices of the congregation while engaged in the service of praise.
