It is stated here, on tolerably ■ good authority, that important changes are to be made immediately in the daily morning journals published in Auckland. Monday next will see the amalgamation of the Cross and Herald, to the extinguishment of the former. Mr. Horton, who recently purchased the Cross, has joined Messrs. Wilson in partnership and the Cross Avill be discontinued, the Herald enlarged, and the Weekly Herald incorporated with the Weekly News. The idea was once s?entertained of making the Cross an eveningpaper, but this has been'abandoned. The literary staff of the enlarged Herald Avill be augmented by the accession of Mr.» Luckie and other writers, and the practical staff of the Cross will mostly be taken on 'to the Herald. Mr. Horton joins Messrs Wilson as full partner. It is stated that the amalgamation has been Urged hy prominent advertisers, Avho have' given their bond not to advertise in any other morning paper for tAvelve months." These are the main features of the neAV arrangements. Wellington, December 29. The Union Steamship Company and the New Zealand Shipping Company have each signified thei- intention of presenting a : silver cup, to be competed for at the. Wellington Anniversary Regatta. A silver scull trophy has also been presented. Dunedin, Dec. 29. • The Guardian states that a man named Smith, resident at, Caversham, has became; heir to a fortune of £400,000, through the; death of a London relative. Mr 11. S. Fish was yesterday re-elected to the City Council by an overwhelming majority. . . : The Council of the Otago Convention has prepared a synopsis, showing the position of Counties which do not choose to bring the Avhole of the Counties Act into ope ration. . ( The educational part of the Presbyterian Trust Fund is now in a position to support another professorship in Otago University, besides that of Professor. Macgregdr. The Synod -will be asked next month to designate a chair to be established. . # William Walker, charged Avith having assaulted Hetty Layard on Chtistmas Day, with intent to do' grievous bodily harm, Avas to-day committed for trial at the next session of the Supreme Court. •
