FAREWELL TO NEW ZEALAND.
So I must quit my high command, My dream of power is o'er. Another will this ruined land To health and peace restore; Tbat ruin my imprudence wrought, That peace my rashness lost, Ob ! what a lesson I've been taught, And taught it to my cost. Where are the noble and the true That greeted me at first ? Aud where that shout of welcome too That from their bosoms burst i Alas! 1 spurned them from my face, I treated them with scorn, And threatened them with loss of place If e'er they dared to warn ;; I failed at any tempting price Their pliancy to win, For independence was a vice, Remonstrance was a sin. And Where's that crowd with flattering lip That fawned so yesterday ? To them my bounty did extend And open was my door, So leeches suck till gorged, then lend Their friendly aid no more. Of all my gifts they bad their share, My faror was their food, Ob ! nothing is so hard to bear As base ingratitude; Fot now, the first to aim the stroke, Tbey seek my name to blast, So clings the ivy round the oak To smother it at last. But hark! what mean those horrid sounds Which swell upon the gale ? They seem to tell of deatb and wounds And battles' hideous wail; Ah! there rash policy and cant Have sacrificed the brave, And there young Beatie, Phiipotts, Grant Were hurried to the grave. And now I hear the Colonists Ruined by savage foes With mournful looks and clenched flats Impute to me their woes; These accents on my ears increase And ring my parting knell, In mercy let me go in peace, New Zealand fare the well I Vatbs,
