“TYRANNICAL DICTATION.” VERSUS CIVIL AND RELIGIOUS LIBERTY To the Edior of the Auckland Examinee. Sir, —In my last letter, under the head of “Civil and Religious Liberty,” is an extract from the Rev. A. Reid’s speech a* the Odd Fellows’ Hall, see “New Zealander,” 11th July 1855. In re-producing that extract, my object is not to avail myself of the free use of your free and patriotic journal, wherein to exercise that right of criticism, which was then denied me by the Wesleyan Body, both Clergy and Laity ; but rather to trace “ Auckland’s evil genius” to its lair, where it “ squats like a toad” at the focus of our Civil and Religious Liberties, scattering its baleful rays into every department of, the general weal. It is more easy than honest m Wesleyans, with a printing press at command, to stigmatize Mr. Carleton as “ Auckland’s evil genius,” and the “ Southern Cross,” in his hands, as “brimstone and boiling lead.” to pourtray him “squat like a toad at the ear of Speaker Bartley,” and last of all as the “Devil on two sticks.” He being so far recovered from an accident as to walk by the help of two sticks, is a fine target for Wesleyan missiles, while they cover themselves with the cloak of Religion.
