THE AUCKLAND EXAMINER. Thursday, December 11, 1856. PUBLIC GOOD.
Newspaper devoted exclusively to the interests, material and moral, ol this Colony, has long been called for by every ■cLss of Auckland politicians. What they demand, and what we aim at establishing, is an organ untrammelled by plAty ties, while thoroughly imbued with the sentiment that our Colony is ripe for a radical change in the administration of its affairs. From the day when Governor Hobson declared the sovereignty of Great Britain, ’comparatively little has been done to enlighten our people on the condition and prospects of this Colony at various stages of its progressive developement. This is the task we propose for ours -Ives ; we believe it an honorable one. In making efforts for its accomplishment we will not shrink from fairly criticising the measures of the Government of the •day, the conduct of those on whom may devolve the onerous duties of legislation, and whatever or whoever shall relate to tne prime interests of the State. .•But Examiner criticism will not be malicious although searching. It will hive justice for princi pie, truth for standard, and well-being of all for object. Infallibility, whether in the discussion of men or measures we do not claim, but a sincere disposition to improve the tone 1 v bile enlarging the scope of political I discussion is what we know ourselves • animated by, and, therefore, need no I hesitate to avow.
The Examiner is a title which exactly expresses the spirit as well as temper in which we conceive a Newspaper should be carried on. Hence its adoption in preference to any other. To examine will be our proper function. That function implies all the qualities really desirable in a public journalist, who should be critical but just, bold, but undogmatic, and apt rather to ascribe pure than corrupt motives to an opponen t.
Commerce and Shipping Intelligence that may be relied on will be regularly published in the Examiner, whose projectors hope by close attention to whatever concerns the trading classes of Auckland to merit their support.
Neither Science nor Literature will be neglected. It has been made a reproach to some States that while a home for genius of hand they are a desert for genius of head. 'I o the full extent of its influence 1 and meant' the Examiner will assist in the great work of developing the mind of our people. We aim at making the Examiner readable by every class, however humble; and to that end nothing can better conduce than pleasantly written Reviews of choice works. Such Reviews are included in our arrangement. They wjjl combine the scientific with the purely literary element, and be an amusing, as well as instructive, feature in the new paper.
Another distinctive feature of the Examiner will be its Weekly Summary of whatever may call for special attention in the proceedings either of the General Assembly or the Provincial Council.
Each number of the Examiner will also contain Notices of whatever may be note-worthy or worth criticising at. our various Places of Amuaenieu.t, together with much Miscellaneous Information. Such in idea is the Newspaper we propose to establish : nor know we how better to express in a single sentence the pith of our entire conception than by saying, —The Examiner of Auckland will approximate as closely as possible to the Examiner of London.
