Borough Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening Bth inst, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr Geo. Spencer), Ore Byan, Schaumann, Buchanan, Gregg, M'Knight, Anderson, and M*6regor. The minutes of the previous ordinary and special meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved. Inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: —From Messrs J. D. Buchanan and Co., asking the Council to issue to them an auctioneer's license on the same terms as last year. The request was granted on the motion of Cr Schaumann, seconded by Or MMlregor. —From the Secretary of the Postal Department, declining the Council's request that mail matter should be de» livered by a letter carrier, on the ground that the business at Alexandra did not warrant the appointment of a letter-carrier. The writer added that the rule of the Department was that there should be a postal revenue of £SOO a year before appointing a letter carrier, which amount had not been reached at Alexandra. —Received —From the Labour Department, in reference to the appointment of the weekly half-holiday, which had to be fixed by special resolution. Resolved —That a special meeting be held on Monday, 30th inst., to appoint the weekly half-holiday. —From the Paymaster-general, advising that the sum of £1 6s, goldfields revenue for November, had been remitted to the credit of the Council. gome discussion took place regarding the shortage of water in the race supplying the town, and finally it was resolved that Mr Bivers be written to, pointing out that the head of water was not being delivered, and asking for an explanation. The tender of H, A. Beid, at £4 10s was accepted for repairing the gutter on the town hall roof. Or Laidlaw stated that, as he was a candidate for the position of town clerk he desired to tender his resignation. On the motion of Or Schaumann, seconded by Ci M«Knight, Cr Laidlaw's resignation was accepted, Or Laidlaw then retired, and the Council went into committee to deal with the applications for the position of town clerk. Twelve applications were - received, and after these were fully considered, Cr Laidlaw was declared elected to the position. Besolved—That Mr Geo. Hannay be appointed Inspector of Nuisances, and that the appointment be advertised in accordance with the Act. The statement of balances showed a total debit balance of £ll2 lis 3d. The following accounts were passed for payment:—J. Travis, £2 7s 6d; interest on loan, £124165; Otago Central Foundry, £10 19s lid; Otago Daily Times, 10s; P.O. Box, £1; J. Young, 7s 6d; G. Hannay, £l2; J. Gartley, £1 6s; W. Bowler, 2s 6d; Borough Printer, £4 13s; Acetylene Gas Co., £3l 12s 8d; E. Evand, £1; Wattoa cleaning Race. £ll 9s 6d ; E. J. Tfcrry. £18; H. Tohill, 12s; total, £28117s 7d. The tJouncil then rose. .
