The Otago Centrantral.
The secretary of the local branch of the Otago Central Railway League has received, through Mr Benuet, M H B, the following reply to a communication || flcently sent ?to the Minister :~ " With reference to your representations in regard to the petition of the hon,. secretary of the Otago Central Railway League in respect to shortening the journey time of the trains between Dunedin »nd Ophir, I have the honor, to inform you that the ptesent train service is a temporarv one only and! t is not possible to make any al' terations in the meantime: but as soon as the line between Ida Valley and Omakau ■ becomes consolidated the speed of the trains will be accelerated as much as possible. The morning train from Omakau will then be enabled to leave about lO.li a.m, that is half an hour later than at present. This is the utmost that can be done owing to the fact that trains cannot be permitted to run through the Gorge after dark owing to the nature of the country through which the line runs. The settlers, may however, re ! y upon the train serrice being improved from time to time as circumstances permit,"
