Arbor Day.

Arbor Day was celebrated in Alexandra on Tuesday last, when one hundred trees weie planted, under the auspices of the Reserves Oonervation Society, in a plot which bad previously been prepared at the upper corner of the recreation reserve adjoining Orcokhaven - street. The bu«iness-people observed a close holiday for the occasion, and the day l>eing fine there was a large attendance on the ground during the afternoon, Unfortunately, owing to some misunderstanding, the trees sent from Dunedin (and which only arrived on the previous day), were considerably smaller than what the Society ordered ; and, in comparison with the trees planted last season, <-his year's lot presented a somewhat insignificant appearance, It was decided, therefore, to plant air the trees at one end of the triangular space that had been prepared ; the intenti' it being to order a further con- J sig uent of larger trees, which will be

/"out 3 oVock the President (Dr Gregg) addressed those present, and in the course of his remarks he alluded to the very satisfactory results of the work done by the Society last year. Of the trees planted last year over 80 per cent, were flourishing, and in the course of time would materially add to the appearance of t'ae reserve. Numerous willing hands then set to work, and in a brief space of time the trees were firmly- established in their new home, the school children taking a lively interest in the proceedings. The Brass Band was in attendance, and played a number of selections, which materially en'.ived the proceedings.

Before concluding, the President and secretary (Mr Bartholomew) conveyed the thanks of the Society to the Band for attending, many of whom did so at some inconvenience to themselves.
