To Clean Steel Backles.—As cut steel is much uued in buckles and other dress ornaments, it may be of use to girls to know how to clean such trifles. The buckles should be rubbed with pnste made of olive oil and whiting; leave till dry, then brush off briskly, and polish with dry whiting. A Savoury Beef Stew. —Cut two pounds of lean beefsteak into slices of an inch thick, well flour the meat and brown on both sides by dipping it in boiling dripping. Into the stewpan containing the meat throw one large carrot (quartered), a turnip, an onion, and a small bay leaf. Pour in the liquor from a good tin of oysters in sufficient quantity to well cover the bottom of the saucepan. Cover it closely, and let the meat simmer for an hour and a half; add a seasoning of salt and pepper. Make the oysters hot by placing them in a basin, covered with a plate, in the oven,
