St. Louis Exposition has a restaurant specially devoted to dyspeptics. Baked apples are the speciality of the institution, and these are said to be very effective in dealing with the trouble.

A correspondent writes regretfully to a back country journal as follows :—Yesterday I had to put the set on my pup, because a neighbour, who gives himself airs, caught his sheep playing with it.

On Monday afternoon next, Messrs Young Buchanan and Co. will hold an auction sale of household furniture and effects, on account of Mrs Kerr. The sale will be held on the premises, near the Golden Beach Co.'s dredge.

We would remind our readers of the Alexandra Fire Brigade benefit on Friday. August 19th, when that well known comedy in three acts, entitled, " Not such a fool as he looks," will be produced by the Clyde Dramatic Club. The Club has already given performances at Clyde and Matakanui and on each occasion their efforts were greatly appreciated, everyone voting it the best amateur dramatic performance yet given in this district.

The following entries have been received for the brass band contest to be held in Gore on October 19 and 20:—Alexandra, Bluff, Cromwell. Gors, Lawrence, Milton, Mornington, Port Chalmers, Queenstown, Eiverton, and Winton. All the foregoing have entered for the selection and quickstep, and in addition, Balclutha and Orepuki have entered for the quickstep. War is a costly business to newspapers as well as nations. There are about two hundred war correspondents at the front in the Kusso-Japanese war, and these cost on the average of £2OOO a year each, making a total of £400,000 per year. The cost of the cable messages is estimated at about double that sum, so that ifc costs between £1,000,000 and £1.5030,000 a year to keep the public supplied with war news.

In the course of his annual report the Chief Inspector of Machinery thinks it is something to satisfy the most fastidious that the Department has done excellent work in safeguarding the interests of both owners and csmployees in seeing things safe for th ra in connection 'virV the n-e of steam power throughout, the cOiOuy. A large number cf defects wee discovered both in boilers and their fittings. Many ef them might be regarded as being very dangerous, and no doubt would have caused accidents if allowed to continue without repairs and a'terations. The revenue, of the Department for the year was £BBOI.

It has been discovered that, the streets of Denver (' olorado), one of the greatest gold mining centres in the world, are almost literally paved with gold, writes the New York correspondent of the Daily Mail. The peculiar kind of rock with which many of the prinoipal thoroughfares are macadamised having been assayed has been found to yield from 15s to 20s to the ton. However, as this stone is so hard that it will resist a pressure of 29,0001b to the square inch, whereas even granite will only resist 20,000 lb, present millng processes are inadequate to deal with it.

It will be noticed from our advertising columns that the Thomas Family will give an entertainment in the tqwn hall this (Thursday) evening, and again on Saturday evening. Regarding the capabilities of the company, "Pasquin" in the " Otago Witness" says:—" The Thomas Family of musicians, consisting of Mr Thomas (baritone), Miss Jeaunie Thomas (contralto, violiniste, and pianiste), Miss Thomas (soprano and pianiste), are at present making a successful tour pf tjie Central Qtago goldfields. The entertainment which the family give is of a distinctly high order, and everywhere they are well received, and give great satisfaction. The Thomas Family intend shortly to visit Clyde, Alexandra and surrounding ! fowns, and I assure the music loving people of these pla'pes that th. ere is a good treat in store for them in the way of instrumental and vocal music." From what we can glean from the reports of our representatives in the towns already visited by the company, we have no hesitation in predicting that those who patronise the entertainments in Alexandra will heartily endorse the remarks of "Pasquin."
