MINING NEWS.
On Thursday last the river rone slightly, the water touching the 4ft, marV. The witter baa since receded, however, and the height last evening at th ■) Alexandra bridge was 3|ft above " n >rmal " mark. We learn that the nest examinefor dredgemaster's certificates will be held in January next. ~The Moa, Manuherikia, First Chance, Sailors Bend, and Bendigo dredges are working steadily. The Golden Beach dredge had to stop on Friday last, to await the arrival of nev ladder-rollers, which were ordered from Dunedin some time previously. It isexpeoted that the rollers will arrive in time to allow of the dredge resuming operations to* morrow.
Waikaia people got into a state of mild excitement last week through one of the local dredges obtaining a "century." The dredge in question, the Duke of Gordon* has been getting well over 50os and 70os almost since starting, but last week obtained lOOos 12dwt, the record return for Southland. The dredge is privately owned. The Lady Anne, another privately owned concern, yielded 82oz for the week. The achievement of the Duke of Gordon was excusably celebrated by a smoke concert—"Southern Standard."
The 7 following items are from the " Cromwell Argus ":—The machinery on the Point D'Or is nearly all taken down, and on the road to Alexandra. If not sold the pontoons will be floated down to Alexandra. Mr Kennedy informs us that the chief trouble about the dismantling was getting the heavy pieces to the top of the bank.—The Halfway House got only a small re f .rn last week. The dredgemaster is gom« to pull the dredge ahead where the.o is a small piece of untried ground—The New Royal Maori may have to suspend operations pending certain arrangements. Unluckily the dredge started to work on ground that was very deep and contained no hard wash, being a sort of a pot hole. No doubt there is solid and payable ground close at hand, but the trouble is to get to it as the depth of the ground makes a short journey a matter of time. Boring has shown that the claim is similar to other parts of the Cutha, but the company has struck a bit of bad luok at the stars,
Tenders are invited in this issue for the purchase of the Springvale dredge, The Fourteen-snila Beach dredge last week succeeded in heading the list with the handsome return iAllan, The dredge is working about 700 yards below the upper boundary of the company's claim. The 'gold won by the dredge is of a coarse nuggety description, and the indications are that, while the river remains at a suitable level, further large yields will be recorded. We are informed, on what we believe to be reliable authority, that the Earnscleugh No. 3 dredge last week washed up the handsqme return of 112$ ox. for about ten days dredging. We understand that lately the returns have been satisfactory, but the above mentioned return is a record return for the dredee. The Earnscleugh No. 2 dreige is at present undergoing a general over-: haul. It is intended to alter the framing to allow of the top tumbler being raised, and the timber for this was landed at the dredge yesterday. The No. 1 dredge is working steadily. It is expected that the Dav T s Bend dredge wiil commence dredging before ; the end of the present week. During the past week or two Messrs Robertson and Paget have been engaged in driving on the new line of reef recently discovered at Oonroys Gu ly, and, so far, the prospects are very encouraging,
