MINING NEWS.
The river has fallen slightly daring the past week, the height last evening being slightly above the 4tt mark at the Alexandra bridge. The condition of the river should now be favorable for gorge-dredging. At the end of last week, the Four-tfen-Mile Beach dredge, which had only recently resumed operations, had to stop owing to the breaking of the main driving pinion of the winch. The dredgemaster is endeavoring to procure a duplicate pinion from some other dredge m the district, but it is not likely that the dredge will be able to resume operations until a new wheel is procured from Dunedin. The First. Ohance dredge resumed work at 10 o'clock on Monday morning. The last load of new backets for the Bendigo dredge were landed at the c'aim on Tuesday, and it is expected that dredging operations will be in fuli swing before the end of the week. We are informed that the flotation of the new company to take over the Monte Christo dredge is assured, and the dredge will probably resume work on Monday next.
After a lengthy stoppage for overhauling purposes, the Perseverance No. 1 dredge resumed work at Saturn day. last. Previous to the stoppage the dredge had been getting between 60 and 70 ounces weekly, so the shareholders may expect that similarly good returns will be obtained henceforth. On Tuesday night the No. 2; dredge was shifted down about a length, and. started a cut on the east side of the river, on maiden ground, and should give a good account of herself.
