A Dual Existence
Like the hero in the sensational story the Jap leads a dual existence. Tn the morning he is the shrewd man of business, whether as seller or buyer, on whom it would be vain for the cun* ningest iogue to attempt the confidence tricks; in the evening, or on a holiday, this astute Jap may be seen, his whole mind absorbed while he keeps a piper butterfly from falling to the ground by the vigorous flirting of a fan, or nods his grey head with glee at the gay-coloured kite as it soars above him, the string held with trembling joy in his withered old hands. The next day butterfly and kite have been put away, and the old man is circumventing, a 'cute "Xtjukee trader, or with unrivalled art is converting the simplest material into a thing of beauty. !«
