THE DREDGEMEN’S AWARD.
TO THE EDITOR, Sir, —With respect to the above, if the reply given by the secretary of our Dredgmens’ Union to “Engineer’s” letter (which appeared in the Eerald a couple of weeks’ ago), is a correct one, I should like to know where we come in ? If our agreements are no good, and the award binds us, we appear to be somewhere between the devil and the deep sea, so to speak, If we cannot claim under our agreements, neither can we claim for Sunday work and overtime, except by joining the Dredgemens’ Union—which we are not likely to do. I am given to understand the award makes no special mention of Engineers’ pay beyond fixing a minimum of 10s per shift. On the whole, the affair seems somewhat gloomy, and I think our best plan is to organise ourselves, so that we may be able to hold up our own end of the stick.—l am, etc.; Engineer, No. 2,
