Volunteer Notes.

The match for a trophy presented by Mr F. Gorman was fired for last Saturday. The weather being favourable for shooting, a fair score was put on by some of the members. The match was won by Priv Forrest, a junior member of the corps. In fact he had only been sworn in a day or two previously and had been allotted the limit by the handicapper, A peculiar feature of this lad's shooting was the fact that at all the ranges, he fired his shots kneeling.
The shooting committee intend picking ten or twelve members to practice for the forthcoming challenge match at Arrow on St Patrick's Day. The team will consist of seven men, and members who are picked for practice are expected to do as much firing as possible in view of this match, as the A.R.V, wish to hold a better position this year than they did on the last occasion, when our boys were last on the list.
Mr Oallaghan, the first lieutenant of the A.R.V,, is leaving, the district to-morrow and has handed in his resignation as an officer of the corps. Mr Oallaghan joined as a private when the 'Corps was first formed and has worked his way up, step by step, until he' reaches the second highest position in the company. He has worked hard in all the positions that he has held, and his absence will be a decided loss to the corps. In view of Oaptain Laidlaw's retirement at the end of "the financial year, and Mr Cailaghan's resignation, the corps will have to look for officers to fill the gap outside of the company. Colonel Robin held an inspection of the A.R.V. on Tuesday, 2nd inst., when a fair number turned out. He expressed satisfaction at the way the men performed their duties and at the conclusion of the parade addressed the men at length in regard to various duties in the field. As the Colonel arrived with the 9 o'clock coach, and appeared half-an-hour later, and kept the men for close on two hours, it being after 11 when the men were dismissed, the wag of the corps styled this parade the " midnight parade," It is hardly fair to the men to be kept waiting from 7.30 till after ll, t and they trust that the next time the 6.0 arrives here he will appear a bit e«rlinland allow the men to get away home , earlier than what they did on th< last i occasion.
