|| BY WIRE,] (From our own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, Wednesday, 8 p.m. It was expected that the Licensing Bill would have been taken first thing this afternoon, but when the order paper was issued at 2 o'clock it was found some way down, being preceded by other important meaaures which will keep the House all day. The agitation against the Bill is still growing, and members are receiving telegrams from temperance organisations in all parts of the colony, to such an extent as to harden up opposition against the Bill. It is expected that the debate will be * prolonged one, and that a stonewall will bo set up. Clause 9 (no license, no liquor) will be stubbornly contested. The remainder of the Ovalau's passengers arrived in Sydney to-day, all well. Mr N Y A Wales, ex-mayor, and an old identity of Dunedin, died here yesterday. The Government are inquiring into the cost, at Home, of a turbine steamer for Lake Wakatipu. If the terms are satisfactory, one will be ordered at once, to steam 18 to 20 knots. The weather for the Melbourne Cup was cool and cloudy, and there was a large attendance. It was a great race for the Cup, Lord Cardigan beating the favourite, Wakeful, by three-quar-ters of a length, Seaport just beating St Ambrose for third place. The winner met with a hearty reception, as also did Wakeful. [Burnside market not available.]
