Lecture.
In the Presbyterian Church, on Friday evening, 9th inst, the Rev J Mackie delivered an instructive and interesting address, the subject being •' Wit and Humor." The rev gentleman in a very able manner analysed the various causes that promote laughter, dealing with the subject from every point of view ; and, in the second portion of his address, he illustrated the effect of the various forms of humour by means of stories, which were much relished by the audience. At the close, the chairman (Mr Budd) expressed the audience's appreciation of the rev gentleman's address, and, on his motion, a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. During the evening, Miss M Fraser contributed an organ selection ; Mr Oalder favored the company with a song; and Messrs Briasco and Thomas played two instrumental duets. Each of the items was rendered in excellent style, and was duly appreciated. We trust that the Rev Mr Mackie may, in the future, give lectures of a character similar to that under notice, which was generally conceded to have been an intellectual treat.
