Borough Council.

The ordinary meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening last, when there were present—His Worship the mayor (Mr Jaa. Kelman), Org Spencer, Schaumann, Appleton, Anderson, Ryan, M'Math, Laidlaw, and Buchanan.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Isaward correspondence was read as follows :

—From Mr Jag Bennett, M.H.R., in reference to the Council's application to the Mines Department for a subsidy for waterworks

—From the Minister of Mines, stating that the Council's application for a subsidy of £I2OO for waterworks would be considered when the Public Works Estimates are being prepared. —From the Chief Postmaster, Dunedin, stating that the letter-box at Craig and Oo.'s office must be retricted to late-fee letters.

—From J. M'Combe, asking for a remission of rates charged him, in return for work done by him in gravelling the road.

—From T. Jamieson, complaining of water having been turned out of the Borough race and damaging his property.

—From the secretary Central Otago Hospitals Board, r« the council's contribution for the year. The inward correspondence was received and the outward approved. On the motion of Or Appleton, seconded by Or Anderson, it was resolved that Mr Bennet be thanked for the trouble he has taken r§ subsidy for waterworks.

Moved by Or M'Math, seconded by Cr Schaumann, and camed-~That the dayman be requested to attend to the matter complained of in Mr Jamieson's letter.

Cr Ryan moved, and Or M'Math seconded—That Mr M*Combe'B rates be not remitted, and that the Works Committee visit the ground and value the work done.—Carried. The Works Committee were empowered to attend to the matter of covering the malleable iron pipes where they cross the roadway. A. Athworth's tender for the supply of kerosene and stores was accepted. R. M'Lean's tender for the supply of 500 loads of gravel was accepted. The statement of balances was read as follows :—Dr Geneial Account, £774 3a 4d ; Cr Interest Account, £3lO 0s 8d; Or Charities Account, £B4 8s 6d ; Or Cemetery Account, £4B Is 2d; Cr Contractors* Deposits Account, £65 17s; Cr Library Account, £9 6s Id; total debit balance, £266 9s lid. The following accounts were passed for payment:—W J Lyon, 13s 6d; W Bowler, £7 10s; P Young, £ll 2s Id; E J Terry, £l2 ; J Travis, £l2 Bd. The Council then rose.
