Government are taking precautions to prevent an outbreak, and a large quantity of the steamer's cargo has been destroyed. John Atwell. an old-age pensioner, residing at Ida Valley, attempted to commit i suicide yesterday, by opening a vein in his left arm. The wound inflicted was a deep one. but Atwell is now out of danger. The Victorian railways are now being got into running order. One half the usual number'Sf trains 'will be run until the hew commissioner takes charge. The Strike Bill was carried by 66 to 18. The penal cause is to,Jb,e omitted. f and Jones have been sentenced to death for the murder of Constable Long, at Auburn, Sydney; with a recommendation to mercy. The Dublin Gaelic Leaguers interrupted a meeting in aid of the Parliamentary fund. They rushed the platform and a fight 1 ensued. Several persons, including John O.Donnell, M.P., bad to be taken to the hospital During a bull fight at Madrid the amphitheatre collapsed. The bulls ran among the spectators and gored several. A panic ensued, and twelve persons were killed and fifty injured. China assures America and Japan that it is impossible to open Mukden or Harbin to foreign trade owing to Russian opposition.
