Football.

[By " Forward."]

Considerable interest was taken in the opening match between the Colliers and the Citizens, which took place on Saturday last on the recreation ground. The teams lined out as follows :

Colliers :—Full-back, W. Jackson; three-quarters, G. Campbell, G. Jackson, H. Kitto; halves, W, King (captain) and H. Jackson ; forwards, R. Kitto, Fischer, Wheeler, E King Carson, Churchill, Paul, Feeney, and Bruce.

Citizens:—Full-back, J. Ooulson ; three-quarters, Butler, Richardson Edgecombe; halves, Cameron, Deady, Brown ; forwards, Riley (captain)' Morgan, Theyers. E. Deady. Kilgour! Tall, M'Eachon, Milne, Considering that this was the first game of the season, and that the players had had no opportunity of practising, the play was decidedly of the fast order. In a number of cases good form was shown, and some of the younger players give promise that they will be worth their places in the first fifteen before the season is out.

The game was played in a very friendly spirit, and very little talking was indulged in by the players, with perhaps one or two exceptions. In this respect, it behoves those who have held, or are likely to hold, high positions'in the club to set a better example to the younger players. The Colliers won the match by 14 points (3 tries and 1 goal) to nil. Mr Cairns controlled the game in a very efficient manner, and gave entire satisfaction to the players of both sides.
