Volunteer Notes.
[By " Lyddite."]
To-day (Thursday) and Saturday are the days fixed for the match Married v. Single. The benedicts have a fairly strong team-—in fact, some of the best shots in the corps are married men. It will be hard to get the best team from among tbe single men, as a fair number of them are on a shift that makes it impossible for them to attend. However, an interesting match is likely to eventuate, and I think victory will rest with the benedicts.
Volunteers will no doubt be pleased to hear that the next Easter encampment will be held at Barewood, when all the Otago and Southland Volunteers will be present, or rather represented. It seems a farce indeed for our up-country volunteers to pass an encampment in Central Otago and go to Oamaru. This was what the volunteers up this way had to do, that is, if the last Easter encampment of No. 3 Battallion had not been abandoned. Barewood, from all accounts, is the most suitable place for field work, and presents many phases of country that are met with in South Africa, and offers great opportunities for handling troops, and also helps in the training of all ranks.
The contract for the orderly room has been let to Mr J. D. Thomson, and will be finished in a month's time. I would suggest that on the opening night, a barrack-room concert should be given, in honour of the occasion. I throw out this hint in the hope that the Amusement Committee will do something on that occasion. Sergt.-major Kibblewhite will be present this evening, when, no doubt the men will be instructed in the new drill.
