Volunteer Notes.

fßy "LtninlEW*]

! The i shooting committee of the AiR.V.? have again come to '■" light," and a shooting programme for trophies and cups is now arranged. Honorary members are-now entitled'to shoot for all prizes, cups- excepted. The competition for the first trophy will be fired this week, and shooting will take place, on the 15th and 17th inst. On the 22nd, 24th, 29th. and 31st inst, and sth and 7th prox,, the cup presented to the corps by Mr H. F. Ness, will be shot for. It is necessary that as many as possible will fire in these matches, as it behoves the corps to send a strong team to Queenstown to fire for the Challenge Shield. It is quite probable that the Commandant of the Forces, Major-General Babington, will be here in about a "fortnight. Volunteers will have to be on their be3t behaviour when the General arrives, and also turn out in Ilrge'numbers. As'there is now retrenchment going on in the Defence Department, it seems probable that some of the country corps that do not come up to the proper standard will be ;i disbanded, and I would not like to see the local corps go that way.-- *'■ , The Defence Department are now paying 2s instead of Is 6d a day for all those who attend camp duties, and the AH.V. have .received the extra allowance for their late camp.
