MINING NEWS.
The river has been steady .during i the week, the height at the Alexandra bridge last evening being about 7f ft above the " normal" mark. .It is expected that the Molyneux Hydraulic dredge-will resume work this (Thursday) evening. The Enterprise . No. 1 dredge, has been stopped for the past three weeks, and is undergoing an. overhaul. It is expected that work will be resumed on .Saturday. ~? New" hog-framing, is to be put on the Sailors Bend dredge, and the ladder, pivot shaft is to be lowered so as to allow of the dredge working to a depth of some five or-six feet more than is possible at present. The work will be commenced within the next day or two under the supervision of Mr E. Knewstubb. The Perseverance No 2 dredge resumed work at midnight on Sunday, after undergoing an extensive overhaul. The dredge is operating on excellent wash, and a good return "taay be expected nrnwaveek? - In reference to the action instituted by the New Royal Maori Company against the Point d'Or Company for alleged trespass, we understand that the difficulty has been settled by the latter company purchasing the strip of ground in question for the sum of £3oo—£so down, and the balance on extended terms.—s Evening Star.* ' The following items are from the " Cromwell Argus":—A party of four Chinamen working above the Cromwell coal-pit washed up £IOOO of gold last week - With the Routing Meg. water in Cromwell Flat there would' be splendid country for sluicing; purposes. —The Lafranchi's. Freehold dredge, which is worked by water power, is/ now doing very well. Hey returns have gone as high as 490z per week,. and as she* uses no coal; "7oz per week cover working expenses.- </Tbere is j plenty of the same sort of ground to. The Earnscleugh No. 3 dredge has commenced to open out. The dredge bad to stop at the beginning of the week, owing to the breaking of a coupling on the elevator : , shaft. "The electric plant is working well. , j The Chicago dredge is working steadily, but will stop shortly for an overhaul. The Earnscleugh No. 2 resumed work immediately after <ihb .holidays, after having . been - stopped for nine weeks for'an overhaul. Several additions and alterations have been, made to the dredge, notably*the substitution of. one large screen for the two previously in use. The tables have also been altered, the old Ones naving been replaced by what, is; known as 'the " West Coast tables." The new tables will' considerably minimise the trouble caused in the past by accumulations of silt. The No. 1 Earnscleugh is working steadily. : s a -- - •
CHICAGO GOLD'DREDGING COMPANY, ... , LIMITED. The annual meeting of shareholders of the above Company was held' at the Company's registered office,' Alexandra, on Thursday evening last, when, there were seven shareholders present. In the absence of the chairman of directors, Mr James Kelman was' voted to the chair. i In moving the adoption of the balance-sheet and report (which has already been ;,pubHshed in these columns) the . chairman congratulated shareholders on the .improved position of the Company since the last annual meeting. A noticeable feature disclosed by balance-sjbeot was thf comparatively small cost, at which the dredge hadUeen run during the year. He trusted that this satisfactory state of affairs would continue; and he had every confidence that the coming year's operations, would be even more successful .than had been the case last ySar.li :He had "much in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet. The motion was seconded by Mr Weaver and carried. The retiring directors (Messrs Chag. Weaver and A. Kyle) were re-elected. The/ remuneration:, off dafectors was fixed at the'-sairie figure %# last-year—-viz., £SO? |i | 1 t - . v Mr F. Tburig was v re-eleeted auditor at the same remuneration as last year. The date of the next annual general meeting was fixed for the second Thursday in January, 1904. A vote of of thanks to the chairman concluded the business.
NEVIS. (From our own Correspondent.) Mining is rather quiet here just now. Most of the dredges are stopped, the Crewe No. 1 and Ngapara No. 3 being the only two under way. The former is working steadily and is reported to be on good: gold; again.' I hope so, as our dredges taken all together are not doing too well this season.
