THE PRICE OF BREAD.-A SUGGESTION

TO THE EDITOR Sir,—Now that the local- bakers have raised the price of the 41b Joaf to 9d, would it not be a wise step for residents of Clyde and Alexandra to make an effort to establish a co-opera-tive bakery in the district? I have spoken to some few gentlemen in the district anent the matter, and they assure me of good support in the event of residents desirous of pushing the matter to a finality. I will not trespass on your space in showing the unreasonableness of raising tho price of bread to the present exorbitant figure. The price is not justified by any sudden or unexpected inflation in either colonial or foreign quotations for wheat. Nor is it because wages are higher than those ruling some years ago when wheat was 4s 6d and 5s 6d per bushel, at which time the 41b loaf was so'd for 7d on the goldfields and 4£d and 5d in the cities and towns on the coast. There is a combination directing the present course of events. Therefore it is our duty to protect ourselves by co-operating to have bread sold at a reasonable figure. I will be pleased to assist towards forming a co-operative bakery in either Clyde or A'exandra should residents of both places coincide with my views in this respect. Hoping the local newspapers will take the matter up in the interests of the public—l am, etc. „ , Wat C. Pitches. Clyde, December 31st.
