SWIMMING
ALLENTON CLUB
JAMES CUP TO ASHBURTON The annual carnival of the Allenton Swimming Club was held last evening in the club’s baths. There was a large attendance, and entries for all events were very good. The principal event of the evening was the 133 1-3 yards relay for the “.Tames” Cup, and this resulted in a win for the Ashburton team by a margin of one yard in a spectacular finish. At the start of the final lap only three yards separated all the swimmers, but M. Frew, last swimmer for Ashburton, secured a slight lead and kept it; to win the cup for his club for the first time since 1941. Another of the highlights was the appearance of the veteran swimmer, R. M. McGregor, who, with A. Stayt, won the dual relay by a clear margin. One spectator could remember swimming against him in senior events 27 years ago, but the years seem, to have had little detrimental effect on his swimming, as, in the first lap, from 10 seconds handicap, he had drawn level with the first swimmer at the end, making Stayt’s lot considerably easier. Results of events were:
