ELECTION IN GREECE ON SUNDAY

CANDIDATES FROM 140 PARTIES LONDON, March 1. A new parliament is to be elected in Greece next Sunday. The new House will have 250 members, compared with 354 who were returned at the 1946 elections. The results will be tabulated on the basis of proportional representation. Some 2,000,000 voters have the choice of 4000 candidates representing 140 parties, reflecting opinion from the extreme Left to the extreme Right. The Communist Party as such is outlawed, but the Communists will be able to vote for a Left-wing coalition. The main light is expected between the traditional rivals, the Royalist Populist Party and the Liberals. The Populists control the present Parliament, but in view of the change of political districts and the reduction in the size of the new House only cautious predictions are being made. There will be no Allied observers at the polls as in 194 C. With the civil war over no serious disturbances are anticipated. The voting will be supervised by a judge, notary public or attorney appointed by the Supreme Court. A policeman will be assigned to each polling place.
