WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

METHVEN MEETING At the February meeting of the Methven branch of the Wpmen’s Institute, Mrs A. Paddy presided over an attendance of 55. One new member was welcomed. A gift parcel containing an embroidered linen cloth and an illustrated calendar was received from the link (Methven) in Scotland. The cloth will be used on the president’s table at each meeting. The calendar was competed for and was won by Mrs J. Crawford. _ A letter was read from Mrs Spilioti (Greece), expressing thanks for sponsorship and Christmas parcels for her daughter, Marie. Mrs Amberger gave a brier account of a recent pleasant outing to Christchurch when 20 members visited the Botanical Gardens, Art Gallery and the Sign of the J Takahe. Mrs G. H. Goldsbrough spoke delightfully of her travels in Ireland with a Shakespearian Stage Company at the beginning of the war. The competitions for the day were won as follows: Bowl of dahlias, Mesdames Paddy 1, Talbot 2, Jackman, 3; raspberry jam, Mesdames Rhodes 1, Paddy 2, Dolan 3; root vegetables, Mesdames Jackman 1, H. Chambers 2, Paddy 3; large bloom, Mesdames Morgan 1, Lemon 2, Walsh 3; small bloom, Mesdames Morgan 1, Jackman 2, Ween ink 3; truss, Mesdames Jackman 1, Bremer 2, Paulin 3. The sales table was well stocked and did excellent business.
