PUBLIC SERVICE BURSARIES

UNIVERSITY STUDIES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 28. A number of bursaries designed to encourage New Zealanders t 6 take up careers in the Public Service were announced to-day by the Public Service Commission.

Bursaries for full-time study in science have been awarded to C. N. Hooker (Wanganui), R. S. Jebson (Auckland), J. H. Watkinson (Helensville), P. P. Williams (Hawke’s Bay), and D. D. P. Williamson (Christchurch). Similar bursaries for engineering have been awarded C. H. Christensen (Christchurch) A. M. Leggat (Gisborne), N. G: Major (Wellington), D. P. Pattenden (Hamilton), D. G. Tierney (Wellington), and B. J. Walsh (Wellington). The bursars are either secondary school boys with outstanding records or university 3tudents who have com pleted their engineering intermediate examination. The science bursars have been appointed to the Agriculture Department or the Scientific and Industrial Research Department, and the engineering bursars to the Ministry of Works or the State Hydro-electric Department. To encourage officers already in the Public Service to fit themselves for higher posts, the commission has awarded special bursaries to five graduates, so that they can take their honours degree full-time at a university. These were awarded to D. L. Bateup, 8.A., of the Labour and Employment Department Wellington; B. J. Campbell, 8.A., L.L.8., of the Jus tiee Department Wellington; E. A Harris, 8.C0m., of the Industries and Commerce Department Christchurch; A. T. Wilson, B.Se., and ft. A. Wood ing, B.Sc., both of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Wellington. The*bursars will work in their de partments during the long vacations and undertake to remain in the Public Service for at least five years after completing their studies. ,
