The Mayor (Mr E. C. Bathurst) was 65 on Sunday last. At last night’s meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council Mr Bathurst was congratulated, on the motion of Cr. A. A. McDonald. Mr McDonald added best wishes to the Mayor and the Town Clerk on their trip to the municipal conference shortly.
Mr James R. Jackson, vice-president of the .Royal Arts Society of New South Wales, arrived at Auckland in the Wanganella yesterday on a three weeks’ visit. He intends to paint three pictures—a large view of Wellington harbour, Auckland city from Mount Eden, and a scene in Wanganui.—P.A.
At an after-church function in the St. Stephen’s Parish Hall on Sunday evening, opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr W. A. Childs, who leaves to-day for the Church Army College in Auckland.- Complimentary remarks were voiced by the Vicar (the Rev. J. Evans) and Mr L. A. Charles, who made mention of the fact that Mr Childs was the second member of the family to join the Church Army. Mr Charles, on behalf of the parishioners, presented Mr Childs with a cheque. The guest suitably responded. A welcome, was extended to Miss M. Finney who will carry out duties as a church worker in Ashburton.
