BRITAIN’S SHIPS
MERCHANT TONNAGE RESTORED LONDON, February 27. Britain’s merchant shipping fleet has iioav been restored to its pre-war strength, says the “Daily Mail.” The Avar-time loss of more than 3,500,000 gross tons has been made good in four years and a. half. The annual report of the United Kingdom Chamber of Shipping revealed this to-day. It said: “This is a remarkable achievement, considering that about half the merchant fleet afloat in 1939 Avas lost during the Avar.” The report said that the condition of the British merchant fleet still left much to be desired. More than a quarter of the foreign-going liner tonnage and one-fifth of the foreign-going tramp tonnage Avas uoav more than 20 years old. It Avas clear that a substantial amofint of this older tonnage had reached the stage where replacement Was becoming urgent.
