WESTERLING CASE
SATISFACTION AT ARREST / (Rec. 10.0 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 27. In The Hague to-day, the Netherlands Government officially expressed its satisfaction at the arrest* in Singapore of the Indonesian rebel leader, Captain “Turk” Westerling, and said his action did more harm to the Netherlands than to Indonesia. The Minister of, Overseas Territories, Dr. J. H. Van Maakseveen, issued a communique, saying that by Captain Westerling’s arrest “a danger to the development of good Dutch-Indonesian relations and. to the building of a young Indonesian State had now been eliminated.”
At Jakarta, an Indonesian Government communique stated that the Premier, Dr. Hatta, the "Dutch War Minister, Fockema- Andrea and the Ambassador, Dr. H. M. Hirschfeld, discussed the Westerling case. The. communique added: “Hirschfeld very much regretted the fact that Captain Westerling escaped from Indonesia with the help of some Dutch military men.” The investigation was proceeding, concluded the communique.
