Serious Fire Narrowly Averted

A. blow-lamp and an over-full petrol tin together caused a narrow escape from destruction of the office and toolshed at the Ashburton cemetery' yesterday afternoon. The blow-lamp was stood for a moment in the open doorway of the tool-house, and the northwest breeze fanned itsjlames toward a tin of petrol. There was a quick flash of flame, and only the prompt action of the sexton, Mr C. E. Roberts, in kicking the tin out of doors prevented a serious fire. The Ashburton Fire Brigade was called, and with their foam extinguisher put out the still blazing petrol tin, by now igniting the grass in front of tlfe shed. Mr Roberts was burned on hands and arms.
