LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 28, 1900). A Clever Ruling—There was a kind of deadlock at the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s monthly meeting yesterday, on the occasion of the election of a chairman. The retiring chairman (Mr Gibbs) proposed Mr/E. G. Wright, and subsequently Mr Gibbs himself' was nominated. Mr GibbS asked his proposer and to withdraw his nomination: His seconder agreed to this, but his proposer did not. Mr Gibbs protested that if elected he would resign, but still Mr Kaye, the proposer of the retiring chairman, declined to withdraw. Mr Wrightyalso said that, with Mr Gibbs, he washed the withdrawal of his candidature; but his proposer and seconder declined to do so. Here was a deadlock, indeed. However, the chairman cut the gordian knot by declaring Mr Kaye’s amendment out of order, as the candidate had not given his consent. , Mr Wright was then elected.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 28, 1925). Personal —Mr A. A. Fooks, who has been clerk of the Tinwald Town Board for ovdr 20 years, has tendered his resignation on account of pressure of his duties as County Engineer. The resignation was accepted with regret at the board’s last meeting, and complimentary reference to Mr Fooks’s able service was made by members.— Refresher Course: The refresher course for teachers in the Ashburton district concluded yesteday. During the week some interesting and instructive lectures were given by authorities on various subjects, ancT under the control of- Inspector Raymond the course proved most successful. Interest was maintained throughout and the large opening attendance was also maintained.
