No. 1 MURDER SPOT

REPUTATION OF THE RAND JOHANNESBURG. The world’s worst murder area may he the reputation accorded to the Witwatersrand as a result of alarming figures issued by Colonel M. P. Goetzee, Deputy-Commissioner of Police on the Witwatersrand. He revealed that there were- nearly 500 murder cases on die Rand and district in 10 months last year. These figures, which were accepted with a public complacency which is disturbing sociaiogists, gives the Rand —on a loose .comparison—a ration of murders to population 10 times greater than that of America.

Two years ago, the United States with a population of about 150,000,000 had 6480 murders in one year. Allowing for the population of the Greater Rand District to be about 1,000,000 this area exceeds the American murder rate per head of population by more than 10 times. —Reuter.
